  Abstract:

Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) will be the first of a series of atmospheric missions to be launched within the European Commission’s Copernicus Programme. With a planned launch in early summer 2016 and a nominal lifetime of 7 years, S5P will provide global atmospheric data products at high horizontal resolution and ensure the necessary continuity after the predecessor missions GOME (ERS-2), SCIAMACHY (Envisat), and OMI (AURA), the ongoing GOME-2 (METOP) and the future Sentinel-4 and -5 series which will be launched in the 2020-2021 timeframe. The single payload of the S5P mission is the TROPOpsheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI). TROPOMI will have an unprecedented spatial resolution of about 3.5x7 km2 at nadir. The spatial resolution is combined with a wide swath to allow for daily global coverage. The high spatial resolution serves two goals: (1) emissions sources can be detected with more accuracy and (2) the number of cloud-free ground pixels will increase substantially. The S5P/TROPOMI geophysical data products include nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, methane, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde and aerosol and cloud parameters. In this presentation, we will introduce the S5P mission and the TROPOMI instrument, as well as the ongoing algorithm developments being performed within the S5P Level-2 Working Group. Based on results from precursor instruments (in particular GOME-2 and OMI) we also illustrate the anticipated outcome of the mission for detecting and quantifying emissions of natural and anthropogenic pollutants.
