Abstract

Particulate matter (PM) is ubiquitous in the earth system. The effects of PM on human health, climate, and visibility are functions of the size, shape, concentration, and composition of the particulates. To fully understand the impacts of PM we need to quantify these properties with high-time resolution. Aerosol mass spectrometry has greatly improved our ability to measure the size and chemical composition of particulate matter in real-time and online. The High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-AMS) has become a standard tool for the measurement of particulate matter in the laboratory as well as the field. In depth analysis of the data generated by the HR-AMS can be used to describe bulk chemical properties of organic aerosol, in source apportionment studies, and to investigate the chemical processing of aerosol in both the lab and the field. This talk will discuss the direct measurement of ambient aerosols in focused field campaigns, and the use of

smog chamber experiments for more detailed investigations of sources of organic aerosol and oxidative processing of emissions.
