The Asian Tropopause Aerosol layer

ABSTRACT:
The first five years of the CALIPSO spaceborne lidar measurements have revealed the existence of an aerosol layer at the tropopause level associated with the Asian monsoon in June-July-August. This Asian Tropopause Layer extends from eastern Mediterranean (down to North Africa) to western China (Down to Thailand) with scattering ratio values between 1.1-1.5 and associated depolarization ratio of less than 5 %. This layer is likely to be an important source of non-volcanic aerosols for the global upper troposphere with direct consequences on the its radiative and chemical balance as well as having an indirect impact due to their influence on cirrus cloud microphysics.  The dataset of trace gases and aerosols provided by other satellites measurements (MLS/Aura, ACE/FTS, SAGE II) together with trajectory and regional models are used to establish the possible composition and origin of this layer.
